IU Bloomington to conduct Culturally Engaging Campus Environments survey

The 10- to 15-minute survey is optional and confidential and will be emailed to all current undergraduate and graduate students on the Bloomington campus on Feb. 15.

All IU Bloomington students will receive a survey containing the above statements and more to help the university better understand what students from diverse populations need to succeed on campus.

Associate professor Sam Museus from IU’s School of Education is creator of the survey, which is administered by the Culturally Engaging Campus Environments Project. The tool has been used by institutions such as Harvard University and Lewis & Clark College to maximize inclusion and equity and to better understand race, ethnicity, and inclusion.

The 10- to 15-minute survey is optional and confidential and will be emailed to all current undergraduate and graduate students on the Bloomington campus on Feb. 15. It is part of the university’s response to recommendations from a university-wide, objective and comprehensive diversity assessment by Halualani & Associates on behalf of the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs.

Findings from the CECE survey will be used to inform the work of educators both at IU and nationally to help improve campus life for students. As an added incentive, Amazon cards worth $20 will be randomly awarded to 400 participants who complete the survey.

Previous surveys have resulted in tangible changes: increased research opportunities for undergraduates, improved career and academic advising, and changes to first-year student orientation. IU Bloomington Provost and Executive President Lauren Robel said that input from students has the power to create an infrastructure that increases all students’ feelings of inclusion on campus.

“We hope that this results in making IU Bloomington a more inclusive place for everyone,” Robel said.
